Learn About Your Health: Cholesterol

WHAT IS CHOLESTEROL?

Cholesterol is a fatlike substance that is vital to the normal functioning of your body. Unfortunately, too much cholesterol in the blood builds up inside the arteries, eventually blocking the blood vessels. This blockage is a major cause of heart attacks and strokes.

WHAT CAUSES CHOLESTEROL TO BUILD UP IN YOUR SYSTEM?

  • High Blood Pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Being overweight
  • Lack of exercise
  • Cigarette smoking It is wise to have you’re cholesterol levels checked by the age of 35 for men and 45 for women, and then have a follow-up check every five years.

HOW TO REDUCE CHOLESTEROL LEVELS: A low fat diet and a few lifestyle changes may reverse the process of heart disease and help to re-open arteries that have been clogged up by cholesterol:

  • Eat lots of fibre which can be found in fruit, beans, peas and oats.
  • Eat two of three servings of baked or boiled fish per week.
  • Avoid snacks like biscuits, chips, and margarine.
  • Make sure you get plenty of exercise, and try to lose weight if necessary.
  • Quit smoking and reduce your risk of heart disease
.
